The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 has been stuck in limbo for about a month now. As a result, the Senate has yet to vote on the nomination of President Obama’s nominee for Attorney General, Loretta Lynch. All this hesitation is due to a portion of the bill which states that the government will not fund an abortion for a trafficking victim. As I have shared previously, God cares about each and every life, and as His child, so do I. Because of this, I care for the victims, and the life that they may be carrying inside of them. Yes, I do not know what it is like to be pregnant as a result of rape, I have only heard the countless testimonies of women who have had abortions. These women forever carry that pain in their hearts. So, for the victims of trafficking who already have such painful circumstances to endure, why add the pain of abortion to their list?
Sadly, so many do not see it this way. The Daily Trojan states: “Clearly, policymakers are turning an issue of human rights into a game of technicality and political checkmarks.” It is unfortunate that the intention of this bill is being tainted. Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader, asserts: “Republicans are committed to turning a bipartisan bill into an unrelated, unconscionable political fight. There is a provision in this bill dealing with abortion which has nothing to do with this … Democrats will not allow a bill that helps the victims of human trafficking and child pornography be hijacked by a Republican ploy.” It is so discouraging to be so close to passing a bill for trafficking victims yet having so much opposition. As the body of Christ, we must fervently keep our leaders and their decision in prayer, as well as the trafficking victims. God is in control even when it feels like waves of resistance are rising against us.
