A bit about yourself: Age, state, major, interests, favorite food etc.
I’m 21, and I am from Middletown, DE. I’m a senior at the University of Delaware. My major is Interpersonal Communication with a minor in Public Relations, Advertising, and Interactive Media. My favorite food is probably chicken and broccoli casserole. I enjoy playing the piano, writing, running, drinking coffee, and talking to people.
How long have you been blogging?
I started blogging when I was a junior in high school, and then during my junior year of college I bought a domain to make my blog easier to find.
Why did you start a blog?
In high school I wanted to use it as an outlet to strengthen my writing skills outside of the classroom. I also used it as a journal of what God was doing in my life. My intentions for my blog throughout college have been for documenting memories, to give a perspective of college through a Christian worldview, and Public Relations related topics, since that is what I want to do after graduation. I want to have a more professional application so I can put it on my resume and employers can see that I write outside of school. I also want to show that I’m interested in Public Relations and I’m not just saying it.
What do you blog about?
College life, what God is doing in my life, and how to apply what God is doing in my life into other aspects. I’m writing through the eyes of a Christian in a very unchristian school. Organizing tips, fashion tips… I call it a lifestyle blog.
What’s your blog title?
“Keri Betters”
What inspires you to write?
To me I always feel like I can’t express myself if I talk to someone, it’s an easier way to convey my thoughts to others. I can write, edit, and take a look at it to make sure it comes across the right way.
What is something that has happened as a result of your blog that you didn’t expect?
A couple weeks ago I got an email from someone who had found my blog through Pinterest. She was a Christian herself and she and I each wrote a blog post for each other. I found her blog first, sent her an email, then she found mine a few weeks later on Pinterest and asked to swap blog posts. I never thought another Christian blogger my age would want to write a blog for me and want me to write a blog for her!
What is the most encouraging thing that has happened as a result of your blog?
I wasn’t expecting people to read it. Back in high school, when I started, I just posted it on my Facebook profile. I was never expecting people to read it and subscribe to it or to ask me when the next post was coming. Something especially encouraging is having younger girls email me and say how my blog post has encouraged them. It’s encouraging that my blog could somehow have an impact on someone else.
Who would you say your audience is?
My audience is mostly females in high school through mid-20s. They are who I get the most feedback from.
What is a negative of blogging?
It’s hard to keep up with because sometimes I will have inspiration and idea for a blog post and sit down and it doesn’t take any time at all. Other days I think “I should probably write” but don’t know what to write about. Consistency is the hardest part.
Were you apprehensive to start a blog? If yes, why?
Yeah, I was because back then no one was really doing it outwardly and promoting so I wasn’t really sure what to do I just knew I wanted to do it. I just kept thinking “I can always delete this!”
How would you define a blog?
When I hear the word blog I think of a 500 word or less text with an image or link that will grab my attention, which is very different from research paper. A blog should be relatable and personal so you’re able to get to know the writer. It is not in third person so you get to know the writer even better because it’s their words and their perspective.
What are some suggestions you have for bloggers who are just starting out?
1.) Keep at it, because it can get hard at times, but it gets easier.
2.) Don’t be afraid to write about what you’re passionate about because your passion about the subject will attract readers.
So, there you have it! I hope the words Keri shared inspired you like they did for me!
